Enforced under major product certification frameworks—including European CE Marking (e.g., Construction Products Regulation CPR 305/2011, Pressure Equipment Directive PED), ISO 9001 Clause 8.5, and IATF 16949—a validated FPC system ensures that mass-produced goods consistently match approved prototype designs, material specifications, and regulatory standards.
Unlike Pre-Shipment Inspection (PSI), which acts as a final gatekeeper on finished goods, FPC focuses on prevention and real-time process control. Quality auditors evaluating factory operations or conducting In-Process Inspections (DUPRO) must execute the following physical verification steps on the manufacturing floor:
IPQC takes place during active manufacturing across raw processing, sub-assembly, and machining stations to catch defects early. FQC takes place on fully assembled, finished products after final assembly to verify complete product functionality and appearance.
Under the EU Construction Products Regulation (CPR 305/2011), FPC certification by a Notified Body ensures that structural manufacturing processes maintain continuous consistency over time, guaranteeing that mass-produced materials match declared performance characteristics.
FAI typically requires 1 to 3 consecutive units produced from the final production tooling and active machinery. These units undergo a 100% full-dimensional and functional evaluation against engineering drawings.
Failing an FPC audit (e.g., uncalibrated gauges, missing SOPs, or lack of material traceability) results in a Major Non-Conformity. The manufacturer must issue a Corrective Action Plan (CAPA) resolving all findings within 30 to 90 days before product certification or buyer approval is granted.
